Excursion to Petra by Plane from Sharm
Highlights
Constructed in the 6th century BC by the Nabataeans, Petra is often described as ‘The Rose-Red city half as old as time’ and it’s difficult to overstate this place’s beauty. While walking around you will be overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the rainbow-coloured sandstone gorges, carvings, tombs and obelisks. Petra, discovered by the Swiss Explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812, has been described by the BBC as ‘one of the 40 places you have to see before you die’.

Petra and the Great Treasury
We will enter Petra on foot through the spectacularly beautiful narrow and winding gorge over 1kilomete in length, until the gorge opens out revealing the Great Treasury.
The Roman Theatre
We will continue to walk to the Roman Theatre which was constructed in the early 1st century AD by the Nabataean civilisation. It was later enlarged and improved by the Romans shortly after their annexation of the Kingdom in 106 AD. They accomplished this by ruthlessly gouging away a street of houses and tombs in order to extend the rear of the auditorium, which could at that time accommodate 3000 people.
Ancient Tombs of Petra
The next stop on your guided tour is tothe Royal Tombs (the Rainbow Tomb is a must for photographers), as well as hundreds of monuments and obelisks, all carved from the unique rose red sandstone.
A walk through the colonnade of Roman Byzantine Petra brings us to the city centre for lunch at the Movenpick Hotel.
Al-Habis Fort
After lunch we continue our tour to the hill of Al-Habis (crowned with a crusader-era fort) for a breath-taking panoramic view of deep gullies and uniquely coloured rock formations.
